Old news by now, but finally got round to watching this prologue, and it’s amazing. Really wish them all the best as would love to see it

Very beautiful film by @karenabad … Watched it a couple of times now and I can’t help but be in awe. It was done for the Philip Bloom Kessler crane competition, and for anyone who knows about Philip Bloom and his following and his work the video is primarily meant to be humorous…but for me, that is almost besides the point. I found it funny, but was somehow restricted from laughing mostly because I was so enthralled by the imagery, the music, the ever so slightly surreal feel of the whole piece, that I almost wish that it wasn’t about Philip Bloom. In actual fact, it could be about anyone, anything, but something about the style of how it was put together really just struck me on a truly creative level that I rarely get these days, and certainly not from internet video. A lot of the time, the whole HDSLR and Vimeo community is all about the tech and the specs and the HDness of it all, and sometimes the fact that you’re making a film gets pushed to the sidelines. It’s something Philip Bloom manages to do very well, treading that fine line between being a cinematographer playing with nice toys, and having that real filmic sensibility in his composition and direction, even if it’s simply down to the choice of music some times. Here I really found that the sheer simplicity of it, and I use that word very specifically, right down to the paper figures and cut outs, which are contrastingly actually quite detailed, to the minimalist music that really makes it something much more than a gag video, really makes this video transcend in a way that I wish more people would attempt to do. That I would still be up now when I was prepping to hit the sack, compelled to write this, should speak volumes by itself. Karen and Angeline…From a fellow filmmaker…I salute you!

The David Mamet school of tough love writing! →

If I ever had any doubt in my mind of the literary acumen of David Mamet and why he is so lauded as a screenwriter and filmmaker, this bare boned wise and angry rant puts all those to rest. If only we had more producers and corporate men thinking with even half the same passion and reasoning, we would have many a great film and tv series flooding us from all sides.
